Currently the only approved degrees in South Africa are the Wits University BSc Property Studies and the PG Diploma in Property Development and Management. The CPM® designation is for property and asset managers of any property type. This international certification is issued by the Institute of Real Estate Management in the USA. It’s a designation that is recognised in America, Asia, Europe and now South Africa and is a mark of distinction and professional credibility.

The certification process has three components:

• An educational component through an approved degree or IREM® courses
• Passing a set of examinations in Ethics and Management and Plan Assessment, as well as the CPM® exam
• An approved portfolio of evidence demonstrating three years’ experience in commercial property management

CPM® courses are designed for those who do not have an approved real estate degree (including non-degree holders). The course is broken down into four blocks of studies – each a week long.
